Pomskies are an incredible breed, intelligent, gentle, athletic and stunning. Both the pomeranian and the husky are intelligent breeds, so if you're looking for a dog to do activities with - this is the breed for you. Their intelligence makes them highly trainable, the more training you put in, the better they will be.
Pomskies are still a new breed, there is so much conflicting information out there; we always recommend meeting potential mothers and fathers of the litter you are looking to get a puppy from.
Huskies are a stunning breed, many people desire a husky because of their beautiful looks. However they require a strong willed owner, to ensure the dog is getting everything they need to prevent boredom. The idea behind the breeding of the pomsky is to create a more manageable husky, in both size and temperament whilst keeping the husky conformation.
This can vary litter to litter, dependent on the size of the parents. We can usually give you an estimate adult size for puppies at the time of matching.
The range can be large, so please discuss any concerns around size with me prior to puppies being born so we can make a plan together on which puppy would best suit you.
There are three different sizes the uk pomsky breeders are working towards, Toy, Mini and Standard. Our previous litters have all been standard size, but we are beginning to look into the smaller sizes for our breeding program.
In short - yes.
Pomskies have what is called a double coat, made up of a soft undercoat and the guard hairs in the top coat. The design of the double coat is to keep the dogs cooler in the warm weathers, and warm in the cooler temperatures. The under coat has a wave pattern to the hair follicles to allow air movement to flow to the skin to regulate body temperature.
During season changes, the under coat is blown, this causes the majority of the annual shedding. This is usually manageable with brushing and a groomers lending hand providing a deshed. Please note that any trimming/shaving will damage the coat and prevent the coat being able to complete its purpose effectively.
These terms above are used to show the generations of the pomsky.
An F1 is a first generation pomsky, a cross between a husky and a pomeranian. Ethically the Husky will always be the mother of this pairing.
An F2 is a second generation pomsky, a puppy of F1 parents.
An F3 is a third generation pomsky, a puppy of F2 parents.
An F1b is a backcross of either a husky or a pom with an F1 pomsky. This produces either a 75% husky pomsky or a 75% pom pomsky.
Pomskies are a highly sociable breed. All our dogs have been socialised with children of all ages, as are all our puppies.
Gems Pomskies are extremely friendly with children and we have many gems pomskies families with children ranging from new borns to teens. We also have lots of family with young children, so our pack are used to children of all ages and are totally relaxed around them.
On top of our pack of pomskies, we also have two bearded dragons, a bengal cat, a beta fish and we have had hamsters in recent months. Whilst pomskies can have a high prey drive, with correct and patient introductions, there shouldn't be a reason why your future pomsky pup can't settle around other pets like our pack have.
Pomskies can have a range of eye and coat colours. Blue, Brown, green, bi or parti eyes.
Bi eyes are where the dog has two different coloured eyes, you can see this in our Hannah.
Parti eye is where the eye has part of a different colour in the eye. Hurricane is a prime example of this as he has one eye with exactly half blue and half brown.
The pomsky is still such a new breed, so as breeders, we are still gathering information on health, height, weight and lifespan.
However based on the expectant lifespan of the husky and the pom, we anticipate a well bred, healthy pomsky to live between 13-15 years of age.
Since research is still on going, we are monitoring the breed and any health issues closely.
As an ethical breeder, I am testing all my dogs using embark - which is a DNA company who analyses their genetic makeup and identifes if they carry or are prone to any genetic diseases.
When researching the pomsky breed, it is important to research any common health issues in both the husky and the pom and be prepared in the worst case scenario. We do all the health testing possible to minimise the chances of these health issues developing.
So the foundation breeds in the pomsky are husky, pomeranian, american eskimo and german spitz klein. Our current breeding program only has pomeranian and husky, however we are looking into adding a third breed for our lines.
Our health testing begins with an embark breed and health kit, this clears them of genetic diseases, tells me how much of each breed they have inherited as well as what traits they are likely to pass on. I have studied the different genes and how they are expressed, being able to understand this allows me to make well informed breeding decisions.
Once this has been passed, we book our dogs in for BVA hip and elbow scoring - these are Xrays that are taken and sent off to the BVA board for scoring. The lower the score, the better the score.
Alongside this, a BVA eye test is completed as well as Gonioscopy, which is again scored. Gonioscopy tests for Glaucoma which is a common health issue in huskies.
Although health tests are extremely important, I also monitor the dogs temperament closely and 'test' their responses to every day life. I say 'test' loosely as it is more observing them to ensure they will pass on the best attributes to their puppies.
We will never let a puppy leave its mother or our home until 8 weeks of age as a minimum. We may even keep the puppy an extra week or so if we feel that the puppy will benefit from staying with its mother.
It is a legal requirement that all puppies stay with their litter/ mother for the first 8 weeks of their life, it is also for their social development.
As a breeder, it is my responsibility to ensure my puppies have the best start to life, exposed to as much as possible and provide them with the coping tools to manage every day life.
As a small, hobby breeder, I take pride in raising our puppies inside our home, exposing them to every day life. We as humans live a fast paced lifestyle and I want to ensure all our puppies have the life skills to not only cope but thrive.
The key to socialisation at Gems Pomskies Adventures is the socialise plan formulated from extensive research, experience as well as learning from my Pupstarts Breeders course. We begin at just 3 days old, using scent stimulation and neurological stimulation, as well as provide positive experiences to new and novel items/ experiences.
Our puppies typically range between £2000-£2500.
